The below info was sent to me, and I have to tell you I travel all over this country and in and around every city I see cameras, transponders on polls and all kinds of strange surveilance devices. It is out of control.

Because the Patriot Act allows them to consider ANYONE a risk at any time. Last year after dutifully submitting my census bureau information, I received a post card in the mail from the census bureau asking me to call the 800# on the card because the needed to speak to me immediately regarding the census information I submitted. I am not sure why I felt I had to follow instructions, but I did. When I called I was asked redundant information such as my name which they asked me to repeat 3 times, then the place and state of my birth... got the the state part and they asked me to repeat it 4 times. I thought it was strange and I wrote it off. Then about a month ago after returning from a trip abroad, I heard about biometric voice identification and I have been a little mad ever since. I guess it is legal now for them to use my image, voice, prints and anything else they want without my consent. Now I know that my credit card company did it too when I had to call in to activate my new card (granted I have had this account 10 years) Now I am even madder.

Lockheed Gets $1 Billion FBI Biometrics Contract

The FBI is expanding its biometric identification systems for criminal, civil, and national security reasons.

The FBI announced this week that it has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract to design, build, test and deploy a biometric identification system capable of using several methods to identify and arrest criminals. The contract, if renewed up to nine years as allowed under its terms, is valued around $1 billion. The base contract will last one year.

The system will expand on the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division's automated fingerprint identification system in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The FBI said the system will enhance fingerprint processing and increase system availability, accuracy, and capacity. It will also expand the FBI's interstate photo system's repository, provide photo search capabilities, and support iris imaging. Finally, the FBI said it will create a National Palm Print system with a central, national repository for palm print data, which can be used to identify latent palm prints at crime scenes.

The FBI said the Lockheed system will help integrate "lawfully authorized biometric data, providing the framework for a future multimodal system." The system will be interoperable, as well as expandable and flexible to incorporate new technologies and standards.

"Due to the many issues associated with identity theft, lost and stolen documents, and the ability to spoof standard name-based identity management systems, coupled with the rapid advances in technology and the nation's focus on combating terrorism, there are increasing needs for new and improved identification services," the FBI said in an announcement regarding the contract. "It is important to note that the NGI system will not expand the categories of individuals from whom the fingerprints and biometric data may be collected.

"However, it will allow for the collection of additional biometric data from criminals and terrorists. Although fingerprint data will remain the primary means of identification, the collection of additional biometric data will be used for investigative purposes and to assist in the identification process."

Thomas E. Bush, III, assistant director of the FBI's CJIS Division, said that although the automatic fingerprint identification system has served investigators well, the bureau's Advisory Policy Board and National Crime Prevention and Privacy Compact Council recommended more modern technology.

Sugar in the foods we eat may soon come from genetically engineered (GE) sugar beets. Farmers in the western U.S. are about to plant their first season of Monsanto's Roundup Ready®, herbicide-tolerant, GE sugar beets. Over half the sugar in processed foods comes from sugar beets and the rest comes from sugar cane. Sugars are often combined in products and not listed separately on labels. Once food producers start using GE beet sugar in products, the only way to avoid eating GE beet sugar will be to buy organic foods and foods containing 100% cane sugar or evaporated cane juice.

Background Information: American Crystal, a large Wyoming-based sugar company and several other leading U.S. sugar providers have announced they will be sourcing their sugar from Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready sugar beets beginning this year and arriving in stores in 2008. Like GE corn and GE soy, products containing GE sugar will not be labeled.

Since half of the granulated sugar in the U.S. comes from sugar beets, the introduction of biotech beets marks a dramatic change in the U.S. food supply. These sugars, along with GE corn and soy, are found in thousands of conventional food products, so consumers will be exposed to genetically engineered ingredients in just about every non-organic multiple-ingredient product they purchase.

The GE sugar beet is designed to withstand strong doses of Monsanto's controversial broad spectrum Roundup herbicide. Studies indicate farmers planting "Roundup Ready" corn and soy are now spraying more of the herbicide than ever before, contaminating both soil and water. Farmers planting GE sugar beets are told they may be able to apply the herbicide up to five times per year. Sugar beets are grown on 1.4 million acres by 12,000 farmers in the U.S. from Oregon to Minnesota.

Meanwhile candy companies like Hershey's are urging farmers not to plant GE sugar beets, noting that consumer surveys show resistance to the product. In addition the European Union has not approved GE sugar beets for human consumption.

Roundup Ready sugar beets, genetically engineered to survive applications of the Monsanto herbicide glyphosate, will likely be entering the food supply in the coming months—and consumers will have no way to determine whether their foods are sweetened with GE sugar.

The first version of GE beets was approved in 1999, but before they were widely planted, major purchasers of sugar, including Mars, Hershey and American Crystal Sugar, promised not to purchase the GE sugar beets for processing. A second version of the beets was approved in 2005, and this time the companies are making no such promises. "The delay [in growing the GE beets] has been due to market pressure," said Bill Freese, science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety, based in Washington, D.C. "Back in 2001, the big buyers said they weren't interested in GE sugar, but this year the growers decided to go ahead."

There are many potential risks associated with GE beets, according to a coalition of farmers, consumer advocates and environmental groups that filed suit in federal court this past January to challenge the deregulation of Roundup Ready beets. The groups include Sierra Club, Earthjustice, Organic Seed Alliance and Center for Food Safety.

One issue is the increased use of the herbicide glyphosate. "Whenever a Roundup-Ready crop is approved by [the U.S. Department of Agriculture], Monsanto goes to USDA to get an increased tolerance for the maximum allowable [glyphosate] residue," said Freese. "In 1999, when the beets were first approved, [the Environmental Protection Agency] increased the maximum allowance on sugar beet roots 50-fold from 0.2 parts per million to 10 parts per million.

"These beets are engineered to survive a dousing with Roundup herbicide, but within a few years farmers will get into a vicious circle, with a huge increase in Roundup use and an epidemic of Roundup-resistant weeds," Freese said. There are currently 100 million acres of Roundup Ready crops in the U.S., primarily corn, cotton and soy. According to an independent analysis of USDA data conducted by the former agriculture chair at the National Academy of Sciences, between 1994, when Roundup Ready crops were first introduced, and 2004, herbicide use in the U.S. increased 15-fold, to 122 million pounds annually.

But organic farmers and seed producers are worried for other reasons. Because the beets are wind-pollinated and the vast majority of the U.S. sugar beet production comes from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, organic producers are concerned that the GE beets will cross-pollinate with organic table beets and other related species, such as chard. The National Cooperative Grocers Association is urging consumers to contact USDA to voice opposition.

But the damage may already be done. More than 95 percent of Idaho's sugar crop is expected to be GE this year, according to Amalgamated Sugar Co., though exact numbers for Oregon's crop are unknown.

Growers have largely dismissed the possible impact of the lawsuit. "It's not going to have any effect on the crop this spring," Luther Markwart, executive vice president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association, told the ag Web site Capital Press. "Growers can clearly plan on moving forward."

Billy is a good little boy. He does what his teachers tell him without question. He listens in class. He follows their orders. He knows that everything authority figures tell him is true. Billy does as he's told. Billy wasn't always this way. Billy used to play in class, and annoy his teacher. He used to rush through his school work so he could play. Billy was a little boy. Now he's a lackey, an easy to brainwash robot for the system. You see, Billy was diagnosed with A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder). Billy was prescribed Ritalin. According to noted psychologist and author David Keirsey, over 5,000,000 children are diagnosed with A.D.D. every year and prescribed Ritalin or a similar drug. What most parents don't seem to realize is that Ritalin is a narcotic, a potentially addictive one at that.

Ritalin is a stimulant actually. The entire point of prescribing Ritalin is so the body overloads and becomes tired, and more relaxed. In other words, it slows the kid down. For people who aren't Hyperactive, it can get you high. But any dose high enough can cause the proper effects of relaxation (which I don't reccomend trying for you amateur alchemists). It may also be noted, that Ritalin may shrink the brain. For those of you who can't put two and two together, Brain shrink = more dumb. In other words, little Billy becomes a good, stupid obedient boy. Many psychologists are saying that there is an over diagnosis of A.D.D. in America. But that's not what the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) says: "Epidemiologic studies using standardized diagnostic criteria suggest that ,at a minimum, 3 percent to 6 percent of the school-aged population may have ADHD. ... The percentage of U.S. youth being treated for ADHD is at most at the lower end of this prevalence range."

They continue to say that although misdiagnosis may occur, A.D.D. is a valid disorder. With this basic knowledge, one might consider the following scenario: A government or high powered group, call them what you like -- it's unimportant for this part, wishes to control the general populace. This group establishes plants in the fields of psychology and psychiatry. They invent a "disorder" that may be found in children who do not join in the group (aka "Free thinkers"), and have mind numbing narcotics prescribed to them. The populace becomes more complacent. Now, when Psychologists and other professionals begin to question the validity of this disorder, conveniently a large organization (The AMA) releases a report saying "Oh, it's real." Now that little Billy is all doped up, and most likely dumb as rocks, he should be ready to be controlled like the good little member of society that he is. And when anyone complains, they just say "nonsense". As if the modern public-school curriculum, the cult of political correctness, and network TV weren't enough to turn our young people into a nation of zombies, now we must deal with the madness of drugging children with psychoactive drugs - primarily in the government school system.

The practice has reached virtual epidemic proportions with an estimated 5 million children being subjected to drugs such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamines (Dexedrine, Adderall). A recent Duke University study revealed that more than 7% of children are receiving stimulants. A Virginia study showed that 10% of children are receiving stimulants in school, and probably a greater number than that if you include children medicated before coming to school.

In addition, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has shown a 3-fold increase in Ritalin subscriptions to toddlers, ages 2 to 4. All this in order to counteract highly questionable and probably concocted "disorders" - Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The first criteria is "often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat." Under impulsivity, the first criteria is: "often blurts out answers before questions have been completed," And the third, inattention, has as its first criteria, "often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes." Clearly, according to Dr. Breggin, this list of so-called symptoms is not a biological disorder at all. They are simply behaviors that put children in conflict with adults. Indeed there is no evidence that children routinely diagnosed with ADHD have any neurological disorder at all. Many of them, in fact, seem to be superior in terms of their physical or mental endowment, and that is precisely what gets them into trouble.

Dennis H. Clarke, chairman of the Executive Advisory Board of the Citizens Commission On Human Rights International, concurred, saying, "The use of Ritalin on children has no purpose other than to slow them down, shut them up, and make it more difficult for them to move around." Indeed it has been called the "sit down and shut up" drug. He pointed out that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Revised Edition published by the American Psychiatric Association, originally warned of the dangers of administering Ritalin to children - but that this information mysteriously disappeared from the most recent edition, thus supporting Clarke's suspicions that the industry is engaged in a cover-up. Ritalin and other such stimulants suppress growth of all organs of the body by disrupting growth-hormone cycles - an effect that is likely to have long-lasting detrimental effects to the health of the child. Animal studies show that amphetamines such as Adderall and Dexedrine cause brain-cell death - and that Ritalin causes permanent brain dysfunction if administered at regular clinical doses. Some children develop tics - which in some cases become permanent. Some children develop severe mental disorders such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders - as well as manic and schizophrenic-like behavior.

The recent wave of school shootings show a consistent and unmistakable link with these drugs. Eighteen year old Eric Harris, who with his friend Dylan Klebold, 17, massacred their classmates and a teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999 had been taking Luvox. T. J. Solomon, 15, who shot and wounded six fellow students at Heritage High School in Conyers, Georgia on May 20, 1999 was on Ritalin. Fifteen year old Shawn Cooper, who fired two shotgun rounds, narrowly missing classmates at his high school in Notus, Idaho was on Ritalin. Fifteen year old Kip Kinkell who first murdered his parents and later killed two students and wounded 22 more in his Oregon school's cafeteria was on Ritalin and Prozac. Michael Johnson, 13, who, with his friend Andrew Golden, 11, shot several children and a teacher at Westside Middle School in Jonsboro, Arkansas was being treated by a psychiatrist and was presumed to be on these drugs. As if this weren't bad enough, Ritalin, Adderall, and all such stimulants cause cardiovascular problems by disrupting the rhythm of the heart, and on occasion can (and have) lead to cardiac arrest. Animal studies show they weaken the heart muscle. Matthew Smith, 14, of Clawson, Michigan, collapsed and died of heart failure. After the autopsy, medical examiners concluded that Matthew's heart had been damaged by "long-term use of methylphenedate (Ritalin)". Medical authorities made weak claims that adverse side effects are rare.

Dr. Breggen states: "In my practice of psychiatry, I am frequently consulted about children who are taking three, four, and sometimes five psychiatric drugs, including medications that are FDA-approved only for the treatment of psychotic adults. The drug treatment typically began when the children developed conflicts with adults at home or at school. In retrospect, the conflicts could easily have been resolved by interventions such as family counseling or individualized educational approaches. Usually under pressure from a school, the parents instead acquiesced to put their child on stimulants prescribed by psychiatrists, family physicians, or pediatricians. "When these children exhibited depression, became delusional, and suffered hallucinations, paranoid fears and other drug-induced reactions while taking stimulants, their physicians concluded that the children suffered from "clinical depression," "schizophrenia" or "bipolar disorder" that have been "unmasked" by the medications. Instead of removing the child from the stimulants, these doctors prescribed additional drugs, such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and neuroleptics. Children who were put on stimulants for "inattention" or "hyperactivity" ended up taking multiple adult psychiatric drugs that caused severe adverse effects, including psychoses and tardive dyskinesia.
"For many years Ritalin has been by far the most widely-prescribed drug, sometimes in its generic form, methylphenidate. It is now being replaced by Adderall, which is a form of amphetamine. We have even more animal research showing permanent brain damage from amphetamines than from Ritalin, a drug that is classified as amphetamine-like. Now there's a new product coming out which is basically a one-a-day dose of Ritalin (Concerta). This new compound will be even more dangerous because it encourages the quick-fix mentality. Also, when a drug acts over a longer period of time, it's more dangerous because if it has harmful effects, it can't quickly be cleared out of the body." We hear reports of people leaving the US to keep the witch doctors from frying their kid's brains - particularly given the fact that parents are now being arrested and having children taken from them for resisting compulsory drugging.

Michael and Jill Carroll worried about the side effects of Ritalin on 7-year-old Kyle. The Carrolls grew concerned when their son was only sleeping about five hours a night and eating just one meal a day at lunchtime. When the Carrolls said they wanted to take Kyle off the drug, the administrators of Berne-Knox-Westerlo school district responded instantly by calling in the Albany County (NY) Child Protective Service and charging "child abuse." As a result, the Carrolls are now on a statewide list of alleged "child abusers," and they have been thrust into an Orwellian family court battle to clear their name and to ensure their child isn't removed from their home. The Carroll's dilemma is not unique. The schools are now routinely using child protective services to seize control of children from parents. According to David Lansner, a New York City lawyer who has seen cases similar to the Carrolls'. "The parents' authority is being undermined when people have to do what some public official wants."

Breggin concludes: "America is the first society to ever turn to the mass drugging of its children as a solution to the conflicts that inevitably arise between the generations. It is difficult to be a child. Childhood is filled with frustration, disappointment, abuse and trauma. It is difficult to be a parent, especially in this modern age where parents are often raising children on their own or while working." By contrast, when we tell a child that the child has ADHD, a biochemical imbalance, cross-wiring in his/her brain, a genetic defect, or some other fabricated biological dysfunction, we saddle that child with an identity that will burden that individual for the rest of his/her life. We disempower children by telling them that they can't control themselves or can't learn; we disempower ourselves as adults by saying we can't reach any particular child, and we actually end up in our frustration damaging the bodies and brains of our children to make them more docile and more manageable. That is all we can accomplish with these drugs - crushing the spontaneity of our children. The solution is simple. Take your children OUT of the public schools and home school them. Keep them as far away from the psychiatric establishment and medical establishment as possible. Put them on a healthy diet with lots of raw fruit and vegtables, and ELIMINATE sugar, junk food, or ANYTHING with artificial ingredients. This is good advice for everyone.

MILITARY COMMISSIONS ACT - WHAT IS IT!!!!

The Military Commissions Act

Legislation Predicated on the Official Story of the 9/11/01 Attack

In short, this law rubber-stamps violations of human rights in the "War on Terror."

The Military Commissions Act (MCA) was passed by the US Senate on September 26 by 65 to 34 votes and in the House on September 27 by 253 to 168 votes. It was signed into law by the President on October 18, 2006. 1

The thrust of the Act is to define a category of "unlawful enemy combatant" to include all irregular opposition to US imperialism that engages in "hostilities against the United States," specifying Al Qaeda and Taliban by name, and then if they are not USA citizens -- making them "alien unlawful enemy combatants" subject to "Star-Chamber"-like military commissions. Such parties are excluded from any protections of the Geneva Conventions, including the right to a speedy trial, i.e., justifying indefinite detention without any legal recourse because federal judges are told by law and threat that they have no jurisdiction over such cases. The fundamental Constitutional protections offered to all "persons" is now denied to an important class of captured persons subjected to grave mistreatment from which they have no recourse because the Attorney General Gonzales opines that it is not "torture."

The table of contents of the 38-page House version of the Act suggests that the authors did not even attempt to hide an agenda to abrogate human rights protections enshrined in international treaties.

Amnesty International provides this assessment of the Act:
Strip the US courts of jurisdiction to hear or consider habeas corpus appeals challenging the lawfulness or conditions of detention of anyone held in US custody as an "enemy combatant". Judicial review of cases would be severely limited. The law would apply retroactively, and thus could result in more than 200 pending appeals filed on behalf of Guantánamo detainees being thrown out of court.
Prohibit any person from invoking the Geneva Conventions or their protocols as a source of rights in any action in any US court.
Permit the executive to convene military commissions to try "alien unlawful enemy combatants", as determined by the executive under a dangerously broad definition, in trials that would provide foreign nationals so labeled with a lower standard of justice than US citizens accused of the same crimes. This would violate the prohibition on the discriminatory application of fair trial rights.
Permit civilians captured far from any battlefield to be tried by military commission rather than civilian courts, contradicting international standards and case law.
Establish military commissions whose impartiality, independence and competence would be in doubt, due to the overarching role that the executive, primarily the Secretary of Defense, would play in their procedures and in the appointments of military judges and military officers to sit on the commissions.
Permit, in violation of international law, the use of evidence extracted under cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, or as a result of "outrages upon personal dignity, particularly humiliating or degrading treatment", as defined under international law.
Permit the use of classified evidence against a defendant, without the defendant necessarily being able effectively to challenge the "sources, methods or activities" by which the government acquired the evidence. This is of particular concern in light of the high level of secrecy and resort to national security arguments employed by the administration in the "war on terror", which have been widely criticized, including by the UN Committee against Torture and the Human Rights Committee. Amnesty International is concerned that the administration appears on occasion to have resorted to classification to prevent independent scrutiny of human rights violations.
Give the military commissions the power to hand down death sentences, in contravention of international standards which only permit capital punishment after trials affording "all possible safeguards to ensure a fair trial". The clemency authority would be the President. President Bush has led a pattern of official public commentary on the presumed guilt of the detainees, and has overseen a system that has systematically denied the rights of detainees.
Limit the right of charged detainees to be represented by counsel of their choosing.
Fail to provide any guarantee that trials will be conducted within a reasonable time.
Permit the executive to determine who is an "enemy combatant" under any "competent tribunal" established by the executive, and endorse the Combatant Status Review Tribunal (CSRT), the wholly inadequate administrative procedure that has been employed in Guantánamo to review individual detentions.
Narrow the scope of the War Crimes Act by not expressly criminalizing acts that constitute "outrages upon personal dignity, particularly humiliating and degrading treatment" banned under Article 3 common to the four Geneva Conventions. Amnesty International believes that the USA has routinely failed to respect the human dignity of detainees in the "war on terror".
Prohibit the US courts from using "foreign or international law" to inform their decisions in relation to the War Crimes Act. The President has the authority to "interpret the meaning and application of the Geneva Conventions". Under President Bush, the USA has shown a selective disregard for the Geneva Conventions and the absolute prohibition of torture or other ill-treatment.
Endorse the administration’s "war paradigm" – under which the USA has selectively applied the laws of war and rejected international human rights law. The legislation would backdate the "war on terror" to before the 11 September 2001 in order to be able to try individuals in front of military commissions for "war crimes" committed before that date.

Analysis

The Act explicitly and by deliberate deception appears to grant rights even while taking them away. For example, the accused need only be informed of charges against him when it is "practicable" (for the purposes of his captors). Instead of an absolute right to present evidence, examine and respond to evidence against him, and cross-examine witnesses -- which it is declared he has the right to do -- there is the qualifier "as provided by this chapter." The chapter provides that no such rights exist when national security is compromised, as determined by the prosecutor and the judge. It declares that statements obtained by torture are prohibited -- but makes "torture" an exquisite term of art. It declares that "No person shall be required to testify against himself" then quietly elsewhere says that evidence obtained by coercion or compulsory self-incrimination is allowed if the judge believes it has "probative value" that "serve the interests of justice," and of course are fit retroactively to expunge former crimes. If Guantanamo was illegal before, it no longer was illegal before; the legal past can be altered.

PATRIOT ACT - WHAT IS IT!!!!

The USA Patriot Act was passed by Congress as a response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The Act allows federal officials greater authority in tracking and intercepting communications, both for purposes of law enforcement and foreign intelligence gathering. It gives the Secretary of the Treasury regulatory powers to combat corruption of US financial institutions for foreign money-laundering purposes; it more actively works to close our borders to foreign terrorists and to detain and remove those within our borders; it establishes new crimes, new penalties and new procedural techniques for use against domestic and international terrorists.

There has been protest over certain sections of the Patriot Act, even resulting in some civil liberties suits brought by the ACLU and other groups.

Following are some of the more controversial sections of the Patriot Act:

Section 215 modifies the rules on records searches so that third-party holders of your financial, library, travel, video rental, phone, medical, church, synagogue, and mosque records can be searched without your knowledge or consent, providing the government says it's trying to protect against terrorism.

Section 218 amends the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), authorizing secret searches without public knowledge or Department of Justice accountability, so long as the government can allege a foreign intelligence basis for the search.

Section 213 warrants -- "Sneak and Peek" -- extend the authority of FISA searches to any criminal search. This allows for secret searches of one's home and property without prior notice.

Section 214 permits the removal of the warrant requirement for "Pen registers" which ascertain phone numbers dialed from a suspect's telephone and "Trap and trace" devices which monitor the source of all incoming calls, so long as the government can certify that the information likely to be obtained is relevant to an ongoing investigation against international terrorism.

Section 216 clarifies that pen register/trap-and-trace authority applies to Internet surveillance. The Act changes the language to include Internet monitoring, specifically information about: "dialing, routing, and signaling." It also broadens such monitoring to any information "relevant to an ongoing criminal investigation."
Section 206 authorizes roving wiretaps: allowing taps on every phone or computer the target may use, and expands FISA to permit surveillance of any communications made to or by an intelligence target without specifying the particular phone line or computer to be monitored.

Section 505 authorizes the use of an administrative subpoena of personal records, without requiring probable cause or judicial oversight.

Section 802 creates a category of crime called "domestic terrorism," penalizing activities that "involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States," if the actor's intent is to "influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion."

Section 411 makes even unknowing association with terrorists a deportable offense.

Section 412 gives the attorney general authority to order a brief detention of aliens without any prior showing or court ruling that the person is dangerous.

Communism is a philosophy that all socio-economic structures will eventually evolve to the point where all people are equal and will provide for each other based on needs and not on greed or a desire for power. As the communes of the 60's prove this is an impossible ideal as it's totally contrary to human nature.

OBITUARY OF COMMON SENSE!!!!

 

 Today, we mourn the passing of an old friend by the name of Common Sense.

 Common Sense lived a long life, but died from heart failure at the brink of the Millennium. No one really knows how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools; hospitals, homes, factories and offices, helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness.

 For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in from rain, the early bird gets the worm and life isn't always fair.

 

 Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second.

 A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including feminism, body piercing, whole language and new math.   But his health declined when he became infected with the "if-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades, his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing federal legislation.

 

He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers and enlightened auditors. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies; when reports were heard of six year old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; when a teen was suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch; when a teacher was fired for reprimanding an unruly student. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but couldn't inform the parent when a female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.

 

 Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.

 As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable regulations for asbestos, low-flow toilets, smart guns, the nurturing of Prohibition Laws and mandatory air bags.

 Finally, when told that the homeowners association restricted exterior furniture only to that which enhanced property values, he breathed his last.

 Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son Reason. His three stepbrothers survive him: Rights, Tolerance and Whiner.

 

 Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
